I have been getting phone calls lately from my customers asking me what they should do about there frozen gutters this winter. I recently went out to one customers home and inspected her gutters to see if there was anything that was wrong with her rain water collection (gutter) system and found that all her gutters were frozen solid top to bottom.
A few questions that went through my head when inspecting my customers gutters.
Question: Are the gutters clogged with dirt and leaves?
Anwser: No, we just installed gutter guards.
Question: Were the bottom of the gutters stuck in a thick mountain of ice?
Answer: Some ice at the bottom but not enough to back clog the system
Question: Was there something fundamentally wrong with the gutter system that i didn't catch the last time i cleaned my customers gutters.
Answer: I visually inspected the rain water collection system for leaks, gutters pulling away, dents, bad pitch and more, I did not see anything wrong with the gutter system fundamentally.
What i decided!
It's been a bad winter, low temperatures, wind and lots of snow and rain make for a whirlwind of troubles for gutter systems and the exterior of your home in general. These gutters that were frozen from top to bottom were a result of this bad winter where the snow falls ,melts, runs down the gutters and slowly starts to freeze up and block the entire gutter system from working properly.
Is this bad? What should i do?
Well the short answer is it is not the best scenario to have blocked gutters but when we live in a state like Michigan sometimes it's just something we have to deal with. If you think there is a danger to your home or the people on your property due to your gutters, it is always best to play it safe and call a professional gutter cleaner.
All in all gutters are a very important part to a functioning home. Rain, ice, snow and temperatures can greatly affect how your gutter system works. If you think you can wait for the temperatures to rise and the thaw to happen that is probably your best and cheapest way to go.
